The Hebrew Home at Riverdale is pleased to announce its newest exhibition Karen Gillerman-Harel: Mind, Body, and Land which features photographs from Israel and explores the connections between the land and identity. The exhibit will be on view from May 20 – July 9, 2007 where it is open to the public free of charge from 10 – 4 pm daily. The opening reception will be held on Sunday, May 20 at 1:30 pm where the artist will be present to discuss her work.
Ms. Gillerman-Harel reveals the public and private worlds she observes through her camera lens, recording candid fragments of every day life and sharing the intimate glimpses she captures on film with the viewer. Her photographs, or “lifescapes” as she refers to them, possess a distinct connection with the land, its history and natural beauty, and the people of Israel. Without becoming overtly political, these richly colored photographs focus on intimacy and hope.
A graduate of the University of London, Ms. Gillerman-Harel has been working in the photographic medium for many years. Her work has been exhibited both in the United States and Israel where she derives much of her inspiration. Recent projects include collaboration on a book with Israeli writer and actor Meital Dohan entitled Women/Life/Love. She lives and works in Tel Aviv, Israel.
As a member of the American Association of Museums, the Home is committed to exhibiting contemporary and modern works of art. The Hebrew Home at Riverdale, which houses a collection of 20th century art, is a nonprofit, non-sectarian geriatric center serving more than 3,000 elderly persons through its resources and community service programs. Its 19-acre main campus overlooks the Hudson River at 5901 Palisade Avenue in Riverdale.
