BUILDING STRENGTH BY SHARING
Caregivers need care too - a chance to share their feelings and an opportunity to learn
about solutions others have found in situations similar to their own.
The Hebrew Home offers professionally led support groups co-sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association of New York City. Additional groups for caregivers of stroke and Parkinson's disease patients are available.
Groups for Special Needs
Support groups for relatives of residents with dementia are offered free of charge. The day group focuses on the needs of spouses whose own aging and health concerns often compound emotional difficulties. The evening group generally addresses the concerns of adult children. Some are members of "the sandwich generation," with children who have not yet become independent and a parent who requires nearly constant care.
Both groups welcome anyone in the community who is caring for an Alzheimer's patient.
"I've learned so much about the help I can get, the lawyers, help in the home, seminars - all kinds of information is available. We share experiences," says Joan S., a group member.
